Если история Commodore показывает опасность управления технологической компанией чистыми «менеджерами», то пример Sinclair демонстрирует обратную крайность. Здесь мы видим, что может произойти, когда у руля стоит гениальный, но эксцентричный инженер.
Сэр Клайв Синклер был настоящим волшебником электроники, причем понимавшим важность удешевления продукта для коммерческого успеха — что уже выделяло его мышление на фоне, пожалуй, 90% других изобретателей. Он умел создавать невероятно дешёвые устройства, сохраняя при этом их базовую, минимально-необходимую функциональность. Его микрокомпьютеры ZX80 и ZX Spectrum стали настоящей революцией, сделав вычислительную технику доступной для миллионов — и впервые познакомив с феноменом ПК немалуя часть постсоветского пространства.
Но он же был и совершенно классическим «безумным учёным», пытавшимся дотянуть до релиза ВСЕ разработки, сколь бы абсурдными они ни были. Электрический трицикл C5, карманный телевизор размером с книгу, цифровые наручные часы Black Watch — всё это были технологически интересные, но коммерчески провальные проекты.
К тому же, Синклер часто перегибал палку в вопросах экономии. Все компьютеры бренда, например, имели клавиатуры настолько ужасного качества, что пользователи шутили о необходимости покупать вторую прямо в магазине. А постоянные задержки с выпуском новых моделей в попытках «спилить» ещё один фунт привели к тому, что конкуренты начали обгонять Sinclair в технологическом плане.
В итоге компания, подарившая миру доступные домашние компьютеры, не смогла удержаться на плаву. В 1986 году права на бренд Sinclair были проданы конкуренту — компании Amstrad.
