Компания Google объявила о первой с в мире сделки, предусматривающей снабжение дата-центров (ЦОД) с ИИ-оборудованием электроэнергией о малых модульных реакторов (SMR). Это поможет расширить вычислительные мощности ИИ-систем.
Шесть-семь реакторов заказаны у калифорнийской Kairos Power, первый должен заработать уже в 2030 году, а прочие — до 2035 года. В Google рассчитывают, что атомная энергетика обеспечит дата-центры надёжными источниками электричества с низким углеродным выбросом.
Впрочем, помимо SMR, уже заключаются соглашения об использовании других атомных мощностей — в сентябре Microsoft заключила сделку об «оживлении» АЭС Three Mile Island, печально известной аварией конца 1970-х годов, весной AWS купила дата-центр, уже подключенный к действующей АЭС в Пенсильвании. Место размещения реакторов для Google не раскрывается, но известно, что всего компания намерена закупать у полгигаватта электричества.
Эксперты заявляют, что сделка является своеобразным «вотумом доверия» к технологии SMR. Такие реакторы можно внедрять гораздо быстрее, чем традиционные атомные электростанции. Правда, критики уверены, что реакторы будут дорогими и, вероятно, будут уступать по соотношению цены/объёма энергии обычным АЭС.
Малыми модульными реакторами считаются установки максимальной мощностью 300 МВт, способные производить более 7 млн кВт∙ч ежедневно. Впрочем, часто SMR называют и вообще небольшие модульные реакторы, не соответствующие этим стандартам.
При этом ни одна версия коммерческого модульного реактора в мире пока не заработала — речь идёт только о предварительных соглашениях. Тем не менее, многие страны в последнее время отступают от «строгой» зелёной повестки — на фоне взрывного роста спроса на ИИ атомная энергетика уже не кажется такой опасной.
Предполагается, что SMR будут дополнять крупные АЭС в нестандартных местах и сферах применения и помогут избавиться от зависимости от ископаемого топлива. Например, в Rolls-Royce заявляют, что один реактор компании размером в 1/10 от большой АЭС сможет обеспечивать энергией до 6 млн домохозяйств.
Впрочем, противники технологии сетуют на то, что пока нет опыта эксплуатации технологии и средства следовало бы потратить на возобновляемую энергию вроде морской ветроэнергетики.
