Правящая партия Индии собирается сменить название страны на историческое «Бхарат». Собственно, именно это слово и звучит в названии партии «Бхаратия джаната парти» (Индийская народная партия, БДП)
В кабинете Нарендры Моди это решение обосновывают тем, что «Индия» является названием, данным колониальным английским правительством и не имеет ничего общего с историческим названием страны. Как итог, нынешнее правительство собирается внести резолюцию на сессии парламента, которая запланирована на 18-22 сентября.
Впрочем, лидер Индийского Национального Конгресса Джайрам Рамеш уже подтвердил, что в официальных приглашениях на ужин G20 президент страны обозначен как «президент Бхарата» вместо привычного «президент Индии».
Не остались в стороне и другие высокопоставленные политики. К примеру главный министр Ассама Химанта Бисва Сарма заявил: «Республика Бхарат счастлива и гордится тем, что наша цивилизация смело шагает вперед к эпохе «амрит каал» (приблизительный перевод соответствует «модернизации»)
Депутат от БДП Раджья Сабха Нареш Бансал заявил что название «Индия» является символом «колониального рабства» и «должно быть удалено из Конституции».
Привычное европейскому уху название страны отталкивается от названия реки «Инд», в то время как «Бхарат» коренится в древних легендах об Бхарате, первом императоре-завоевателе всего Индостана.
Смена названия всей страны вполне соответствует начавшемуся в конце прошлого века процессу возвращения к национальным корням. Так, Бомбей стал Мумбаи, Мадрас получил имя Ченнаи, а Калькутта стала Колкатой.
