С конца 18в эти необычные башни стали появляться во многих городах и множество людей были тому несказанно рады. Почему? Так эти башни поставили на поток изготовление оружейной дроби, ведь до того каждую дробинку приходилось отливать в отдельной форме. Всё изменилось когда британец Уильям Уотс в 1782 г запатентовал свою революционную технологию, упростив жизнь и сэкономив деньги множества охотников. Так и появились стрелковые, они же дробовые или дроболитейные башни.
Как гласит легенда, рождение идеи напоминало озарение другого известного британца — сэра Исаака Ньютон, который обратил внимание на падающее яблока. Уильям Уотс же заметил что падающие капли дождя имеют идеальную круглую форму. Очевидно что Уотс был заядлым стрелком, так что одно у него немедленно увязалось с другим и на него снизошло озарение как можно лить оружейную дробь очень быстро и очень, очень много.
Понятное дело, что если падение придаёт такую форму воде, то почему бы тому же самому не сработать с расплавленным свинцом. Подумал, опробовал, довёл до ума, запатентовал. И вот по всему миру стали множиться те самые стрелковые (от английского shot tower) или дробовые, или же дроболитейные башни.
Как и многие гениальные идеи, литьё дроби с помощью силы притяжения исключительно просто. Нужно построить упомянутую башню и расположить наверху плавильню свинца. Расплав выливается через особое сито или решётку вниз, где и падает в ёмкость с водой. Небольшие отверстия сита порционно отправляют капли свинца в полёт, а сила притяжения, аэродинамика и поверхностное натяжение свинца делают всё остальное. В итоге на дне ёмкости в нижней части башни остаётся та самая дробь. Кстати, для того чтобы капли легче принимали нужную сферическую форму в сплав добавляют порядка 0,2 % мышьяка или сурьму.
Как правило, высота башен составляла 30-40 метров. Но в середине 19в придумали подавать снизу вверх поток воздуха и уменьшить за счёт этого высоту башен.
Выловленная со дна бассейна дробь отправляется на сушку и полировку в барабан. Разумеется, изрядная часть дроби получается нужной формы и некондицию нужно отсортировать. Для этого используют следующий, тоже совершенно технически нехитрый способ.
Нужно лишь установить под небольшим углом несколько плоскостей и высыпать на них сверху дробь. Максимально близкие к шарообразной форме дробинке в итоге скатятся вниз, а остальные останутся сверху или скатятся куда-то вбок. Отходов не будет — брак снова пойдёт на переплавку, чтобы в итоге стать идеальными круглыми дробинками.
Потом дробь отправляется на дальнейшую сортировку через «грохоты», где распределяется по калибру.
Сейчас единственная действующая дроболитейная башня в Европе находится в Даугавпилсе. Судя по тому, что удалось узнать, работает она больше в музейном виде и дробь там льют достаточно редко. Но, всё же, льют.
В меньших масштабах такой способ используется и сейчас, и многие охотники кустарно, дома льют дробь прямо в воду.
