По оценкам ученых на Земле произрастает более 73 тысяч видов деревьев, подавляющему большинству из них неведома социальная дистанция, однако есть несколько видов, которые всё же её придерживаются. Сегодня попытаемся разобраться в причинах этого явления.
Феномен, когда кроны взрослых деревьев не соприкасаются друг с другом, словно держа дистанцию и формируя характерные пробелы, получил название «застенчивость кроны». Это явление присуще следующим видам: черное мангровое дерево (Avicennia Germinans), сосна скрученная (Pinus contorta), лиственница японская (Larix kaempferi), каркас колючий (Celtis spinosa), птероцимбиум беккара (Pterocymbium beccarii), дриобаланопс ароматный (Dryobalanops aromatica), а также некоторым видам эвкалипта. Из всех перечисленных на территории России в естественной среде можно встретить только эвкалипт.
Застенчивость кроны возможна как между деревьями одного вида, так и разных видов. Более того, она может возникать не только между соседними деревьями, но и между ветвями одного дерева. Феномен практически невозможно заметить при аэросъемке, но он сразу бросается в глаза, если смотреть снизу.
Застенчивость кроны в научной литературе обсуждается с 20-х годов прошлого века. Было выявлено несколько возможных причин, однако к единому мнению исследователи так и не пришли. Одним из главных виновников считается ветер. Во влажных тропических или субтропических горных вечнозелёных лесах его скорость может превышать 28 м/с. В таких условиях застенчивость кроны не позволяет ветвям повреждать друг друга, это показали исследования 1955-го и 1984-го годов.
В ветреных регионах деревья часто имеют встроенную защиту от ветра — склонность отращивать более короткие, но толстые ветви. К сожалению, этого не всегда достаточно — на краях крон были обнаружены поврежденные ветви и листья, которые со временем отмирают, тем самым формируя эти характерные пустые промежутки. Проведенные эксперименты показали, что в изолированном от ветра месте деревья постепенно заполняют пространство между кронами.
Однако в 1977 году малазийский ботаник Фрэнсис Ын пришел к совершенно другим результатам. В ходе своих исследований ему не удалось обнаружить доказательства повреждения крон в результате воздействия ветра. Он высказал предположение, что кроны изученных им дриобаланопсов ароматных настолько чувствительны к свету, что перестают расти при сближении с другими растениями. Фрэнсис Ын также пришел к выводу, что проникающий через эти «промежутки» солнечный свет позволяет развиваться другим растениям (т.н. подлесок) и животным, которые в свою очередь приносят пользу деревьям.
Защитные механизмы также рассматриваются как одна из причин застенчивости кроны. Таким способом деревья могут пусть и не остановить, но хотя бы замедлить распространение заболеваний и листогрызущих насекомых. Другая гипотеза о возникновении социального дистанцирования у деревьев рассматривает в качестве причины аллелопатию.
Давно известно, что некоторые виды деревьев (да и других растений) далеко не так безобидны, как могут показаться на первый взгляд. Аллелопатия — это выделение растениями химических соединений, которые не только препятствуют размножению микроорганизмов, но и в отдельных случаях подавляют рост соседних растений, порой даже того же самого вида. В теории у взрослых деревьев такое «поведение» может препятствовать сближению их крон.
