В возрасте 95-ти лет ушел из жизни Фрэнк Борман, который в
качестве командира миссии Аполлон-8 в 1968 году возглавил облет Луны.
В память о выдающемся исследователе космоса НАСА сделало
заявление, охарактеризовав Фрэнка Бормана как настоящего американского героя, прекрасно
представлявшего себе роль космических исследований в объединении человечества. Администратор
НАСА Билл Нельсон выразил уверенность, что яркий жизненный путь Фрэнка Бормана
станет примером для участников миссий НАСА Артемида.
Впервые с самолетами Фрэнк познакомился, когда ему было 15
лет, что в дальнейшем привело его в ВВС и НАСА.
С 1950 года Фрэнк Борман кадровый офицер,
летчик-истребитель, летчик испытатель-экспериментатор. За время службы получил
степень доцента кафедры термодинамики и гидромеханики в Вест-Пойнте.
За три года до облета Луны Фрэнк Борман возглавлял
команду астронавтов миссии Джеминни-7. Целью миссии была отработка длительного
пребывания людей в космосе и сближение с кораблем Джемини-6. Длительность
полета тогда составила почти 17 дней, а расстояние между кораблями
варьировались от 0,3 до 90 метров на протяжении 3-х витков вокруг Земли.
После окончания сотрудничества с НАСА Фрэнк
Борман вернулся в авиацию в качестве генерального директора Eastern
Airlines.
Выше любви к авиации и космическим исследованиям для Фрэнка
была только его любовь к жене Сьюзан.
Фрэнка Бормана не стало 7 ноября 2023 года.
