Врезавшийся в обратную сторону Луны в марте прошлого года загадочный объект, оставивший необычную двойную 29-метровую воронку близ кратера Герцшпрунг, судя по всему, оказалась останками китайской ракеты «Чанчжэн-3C». Хотя его заметили задолго до столкновения со спутником Земли и отслеживали движение, происхождение до недавних пор не удавалось установить.
Изначально объект, которому присвоили идентификатор WE0913A, некоторыми экспертами считался второй ступенью ракеты Falcon 9 компании SpaceX — предположительно остатком миссии по запуску спутника DSCOVR в феврале 2015 года. Тем не менее вскоре астрономы нашли другого кандидата — третью ступень китайской ракеты «Чанчжэн-3C», доставившей к Луне беспилотный аппарат «Чанъэ-5Т1» в октябре 2014 года.
Если ранее это была лишь гипотеза, то теперь учёные Университета Аризоны подготовили целое исследование с выкладками, доказывающими правдивость своей информации. Учитывалась траектория и спектроскопический анализ, свидетельствовавшие, что WE0913A и является «Чанчжэн-3C». В Китае тем временем заявляли, что верхняя ступень ракеты сгорела в земной атмосфере вскоре после старта миссии «Чанъэ-5Т1», «Чанъэ-5». Впрочем, утверждение опровергали американские военные, утверждавшие, что соответствующий объект никогда не возвращался в атмосферу.
Также учёные сравнили характеристики WE0913A с показателями тысяч гипотетических космических объектов с помощью компьютерной симуляции. Она показала, что в условиях космоса его свойства соответствуют предмету, напоминающему гантель — со значительными массами с обеих концов.
Одной из таких «масс» были два двигателя верхней ступени. Судя по движению объекта, присутствовала и значительная масса на другом его конце, особенно с учётом того, что он сформировал двойную воронку на лунной поверхности.
Чем именно является вторая «масса» третьей ступени, остаётся загадкой. Учёные могут лишь предполагать, что речь идёт о дополнительной поддерживающей конструкции, вспомогательном инструментарии
