В наше время мы привыкли к тому, что летать в воздухе могут только птицы, насекомые и летучие млекопитающие. Но в далеком прошлом, когда на Земле царили динозавры, существовали и другие летающие существа — птерозавры, кюнеозавры и другие крылатые рептилии. Они не были прямыми предками современных птиц, а представляли собой отдельную ветвь эволюции, которая, к сожалению, не дожила до наших дней.
Одним из самых интересных и загадочных представителей этой ветви были кюнеозавры — маленькие рептилии, похожие на ящериц, но с длинными ребрами, которые служили основой для кожных крыльев. Они жили в позднем триасе, около 200 миллионов лет назад, и могли парить от дерева к дереву, ловя насекомых. Их кости были обнаружены в разных частях мира, включая Европу, Азию и Северную Америку. Но одно из самых богатых мест их нахождения было на острове Мендип в Англии.
Остров Мендип был частью архипелага маленьких островов, расположенных в теплом субтропическом море. На нем процветала разнообразная флора и фауна, включая растения, насекомых, разные виды рыб, моллюсков и рептилий. Среди последних были не только кюнеозавры, но и другие виды, такие как трилофозавр Variodens — рептилии со сложными зубами, которые могли разжевывать твердую пищу, и пахистрофеусы — водные рептилии, с похожим на выдр образом жизни, которые питались креветками и мелкой рыбой. К сожалению, динозавров на острове Мендип не нашли, хотя они, вероятно, там были, так как их кости находили в других местах того же возраста вокруг Бристоля.
Как же ученые узнали об этих древних животных? Ответ кроется в известняке — породе, которая состоит из скоплений мелких организмов, осевших на дне моря. Известняк образовывался в течение миллионов лет, и в нем застывали окаменелости разных существ, включая рептилий. Эти окаменелости были обнаружены в 1940-х и 1950-х годах, когда на острове Мендип действовали известняковые карьеры. Тогда же палеонтологи могли посещать эти карьеры и собирать образцы костей, которые передавали в музеи и университеты.
Одним из таких палеонтологов был Вальтер Кюне — немец, который был взят в плен во время Второй мировой войны и работал на ферме в Англии. Он увлекался изучением окаменелостей и собрал много образцов кюнеозавров, которые он изучал в свободное время. Он дал им название в честь своей фамилии — Kuehneosaurus. Позже он вернулся в Германию и продолжил свои исследования, став известным палеонтологом.
Другими знаменитыми искателями окаменелостей были Том Фрай — коллекционер-любитель, работавший на Университет Бристоля, и Памела Робинсон — исследовательница из Университетского колледжа Лондона. Они также собирали и изучали кости рептилий с острова Мендип и передавали их в научные учреждения.
Но самое интересное началось позже, когда магистрант Университета Бристоля Майк Которн взялся за переосмысление этих коллекций. Он смог идентифицировать разные виды рептилий, сравнивая их с более полными скелетами из других мест. Он также смог восстановить образ жизни этих животных, опираясь на их анатомию и экологию тех времен. Он опубликовал свои результаты в журнале Proceedings of the Geologists’ Association, где он рассказал о разнообразии и уникальности фауны острова Мендип.
Что же делает этих рептилий такими особенными? Прежде всего, это их способность летать. Кюнеозавры не были единственными рептилиями, которые могли парить в воздухе, но они были одними из самых ранних и примитивных. Их крылья были сделаны из кожи, натянутой на удлиненные ребра, которые могли выдвигаться и втягиваться. Это было похоже на механизм, который использует современная летучая ящерица Драко из Юго-Восточной Азии. Однако кюнеозавры были не просто летучими ящерицами, а отдельной группой рептилий, которая была ближе по родству к крокодилам и динозаврам.
Существовало два вида кюнеозавров — Kuehneosaurus latus и Kuehneosaurus mordax. Первый имел более развитые крылья, которые достигали 30 см в длину, и мог летать на расстояние до 10 метров. Второй имел более короткие крылья, около 15 см, и мог летать на гораздо меньшие расстояния. Оба вида имели длинные хвосты, которые помогали им управлять собой в воздухе. Их размеры были небольшими — тело без хвоста не превышало 20 см, а вес не превышал 100 грамм. Они питались насекомыми, которых ловили в воздухе или на деревьях. Зубы были острыми и крючковатыми, что помогало им удерживать свою добычу.
Как же эти рептилии могли эволюционировать таким образом, чтобы обрести способность к парению? Ученые считают, что это был результат адаптации к окружающей среде. Остров Мендип был покрыт лесами, где конкуренция за пищу и пространство была высокой. Кюнеозавры нашли свою нишу в кронах деревьев, где они могли избегать хищников и находить больше насекомых. Для этого им понадобились способности к лазанию и прыжкам, которые со временем превратились в способность к парению. Их ребра стали более длинными и гибкими, а кожа между ними образовала крылья. Это был пример конвергентной эволюции, когда разные группы организмов развивают похожие черты независимо друг от друга.
Кюнеозавры не были единственными рептилиями, которые летали таким образом. В то же время в других частях мира существовали другие группы, которые имели похожую анатомию и образ жизни. Они также были близкими родственниками крокодилов и динозавров, но не птерозавров, которые были отдельной ветвью эволюции. Птерозавры имели другой механизм полета — их крылья состояли из перьев и были прикреплены к одному длинному пальцу на передней конечности. Они были более крупными и мощными летунами, чем кюнеозавры, и могли летать на большие расстояния и достигать большой высоты.
К сожалению, кюнеозавры и другие крылатые рептилии не смогли выжить в изменяющемся мире. Они исчезли в конце триаса или в начале юры, около 200-190 миллионов лет назад, во время одного из самых крупных массовых вымираний в истории Земли. Причины этого вымирания не до конца известны, но среди них могут быть вулканическая активность, изменение климата, снижение уровня моря и конкуренция с другими животными. Возможно, кюнеозавры не смогли адаптироваться к новым условиям или не смогли соперничать с птерозаврами, которые стали доминировать в воздухе.
