Конечно, всем известно, что Моцарт и Бетховен прославились тем, что писали музыку для рингтонов стареньких «Сименсов», но, оказывается, композиторы увлекались и часовым искусством. И, хотя, вы уже догадались, о чем пойдет речь, начну немного издалека.
Часовая история сохранила для нас немало имен, без которых, если честно, совершенно спокойно можно жить. Например, в некоторых музеях встречаются вот такие часы:
Ну лежат себе и лежат. На них стоит фамилия «Clay», датируют модель 1720-ми. Историки полагают, что эта работа может принадлежать мастеру Чарльзу Клэю, и все равно все это ни о чем не говорит: часов таких сотни и тысячи.
Клэй умер в 1740 году, и его вдова решила через несколько лет устроить что-то вроде ретроспективной выставки. Так вот выяснилось, что Клэй был одним из талантливых механиков своего времени, создателем автоматонов и — что существенно — музыкальных часов.
Музыкальных часов много, при чем тут Клэй?
Вопрос справедливый, и я сказал бы, что Клэй действительно тут не так важен: во всяком случае спор за патент он проиграл своему современнику. Первые музыкальные часы приходятся на конец XVI века, а в начале XVII часы-органы были уже примерно такими:
При этом, мы даже знаем, как они звучали: сегодня на многие мелодии есть современная нотная транскрипция.
Гендель
Но Клэй примечателен тем, что для его музыкальных часов музыку создавал Гендель.
Любопытно, но эта история как бы открывает нам целый жанр, и он действительно существовал: «Музыка для механических часов». То есть буквально вот можно было встретить и сюиту для фортепиано с оркестром, и сонату для музыкальных часов.
Сложно сказать, узнали бы мы об этом без Генделя и Клэя, но многие творения композиторов в этом жанре действительно становились известными лишь после смерти последних, так что вероятность того, что они использовались в «реальных часах» не так уже велика. Но исследователи нашли такие музыкальные пьесы и в творчестве Моцарта, и в творчестве Бетховена (после смерти), и в творчестве других в той или иной мере известных композиторов.
Как это звучит?
Так как до нашего времени дошли не все часы, но многие ноты, то музыку не всегда можно извлечь из инструмента, для которого она предназначена, то есть — из часов. Но многие пьесы переложены. Так, например, можно ознакомиться с мелодиями Генделя для механических часов в таком исполнении:

Наконец, можно сделать еще один интересный вывод. Обычно, когда заходит речь о часах как об искусстве, все же на память не приходит какого-то направления или стиля, которые бы часы создали. Скорее часы следовали трендом, а здесь можно видеть целый отдельный жанр, который возник из-за часов и как таковой не появился бы без часов в принципе.
