Попугаи весьма сообразительны и сильно зависят от социальных связей. При этом они часто одомашниваются людьми, но далеко не всегда у хозяев есть время для того, чтобы уделять им достаточно внимания. Учёные выяснили, что случаи депрессии от одиночества можно купировать, организовав крылатым друзьям общение со своими сородичами по видеосвязи.
По данным исследователей, около 40 % какаду и африканских серых попугаев склонны к саморазрушительному поведению при стрессах, особенно если они живут в непривычной для себя среде с недостатком общения. Новое исследование показало, что современные технологии позволяют вернуть попугаям социальную активность и хорошее настроение.
В исследовании приняли участие учёные из Университета Глазго, Массачусетского технологического института и Северо-Восточного университета (США). Они принялись изучать поведение нескольких видов попугаев во время коротких сессий видеообщения друг с другом. В течение трёх месяцев учёные обучали 18 попугаев и их хозяев работе с сенсорными дисплеями смартфонов и планшетов.
Изначально попугаев научили ассоциировать видеовызов со звонком колокольчика. Каждый раз, как тот звонил, птица получала пищевую «награду». После обучения попугаи звонили в колокольчики по собственной инициативе, после чего их хозяева/»опекуны» должны были запускать видеоприложение одной из социальных сетей для общения с другими птицами. В большинстве случаев хозяева констатировали, что «беседы» попугаев между собой существенно улучшали их настроение, а некоторые даже обучились новым навыкам вроде новых техник полёта.
Исследование было разбито на две фазы. В первые 10 недель хозяевам рассказывали, как научить птиц взаимодействовать с устройствами, оснащёнными сенсорными дисплеями. Попугаи оказались довольно восприимчивы к обучению благодаря сильным когнитивным способностям, хорошему зрению и подвижным языкам. После обучения они имели возможность познакомиться в видеочате с каждой из птиц, участвовавших в эксперименте как минимум дважды. После этого попугаев научили звонить в колокольчик, чтобы обозначить интерес к совершению вызова, заодно птицы получали пищевое вознаграждение за звонки.
На втором этапе исследователи убрали пищевые стимулы и выяснилось, что попугаи по-прежнему заинтересованы в видеозвонках даже без пищевого поощрения, причём многие звонили весьма настойчиво, призывая хозяина для активации планшета. После включения появлялся экран с фотографиями «собеседников» и попугаи уже сами выбирали на сенсорных экранах с помощью языков, кому именно позвонить. В ходе сессий птицы общались друг с другом очень эмоционально, прыгая, издавая звуки и вертя головами, некоторые «пели» в унисон — приблизительно так же попугаи ведут себя в дикой природе. В некоторых случаях, если «собеседник» исчезал с экрана, попугай начинал активно звонить в колокольчик.
Примечательно, что участвовавшие в исследованиях попугаи проявляли намного меньше интереса к готовым видеозаписям других попугаев, хотя и они заметно поднимали испытуемым настроение. Тем не менее лучше всего были «беседы» в режиме реального времени.
Учёные надеются, что подобное исследование когда-нибудь поможет социализации домашних попугаев. 71,4 % участников эксперимента из числа людей заявили, что попугаи получили очень положительный опыт и ни один не сказал, что опыт был негативным. Один из владельцев попугаев заявлял, что его питомец буквально «оживал» во время видеочатов. Хотя учёные признают, что сделать попугаев столь же счастливыми, как и на свободе невозможно, можно значительно улучшить жизнь тем, кто живёт с людьми — даже просто демонстрируя записи собратьев, не говоря о реальном видеообщении.
