В сердце этой задачи лежит явление квантовой запутанности, которое позволяет связывать квантовые системы, находящиеся на большом расстоянии друг от друга. Одной из ключевых областей исследования в сфере квантовых коммуникаций является разработка устойчивых узлов квантовой памяти, которые способны хранить и обрабатывать квантовую информацию, передаваемую по волоконно-оптическим каналам.
В новой работе, опубликованной в журнале Nature, ученые из Гарвардского университета и AWS Center for Quantum Networking представили экспериментальную реализацию квантовой сети, состоящей из двух узлов квантовой памяти, построенных на основе центров кремния-вакансии (SiV) в алмазах.
Как работает квантовая сеть на основе SiV-центров?
SiV-центры, представляющие собой дефекты в кристаллической решетке алмаза, обладают уникальными свойствами, делающими их идеальными кандидатами для квантовых сетей. В их структуре можно выделять два типа спиновых состояний — электронный спин и спин ядра атома 29Si. Электронный спин, являясь «рабочим» кубитом, взаимодействует с фотонами света, а ядро 29Si служит долгоживущим хранилищем квантовой информации.
Важной особенностью SiV-центров является возможность их интеграции с нанофотонными резонаторами. Резонатор, представляющий собой микроскопическую полость, позволяет значительно усилить взаимодействие между электронным спином и фотонами света, делая систему более эффективной.
Создание запутанных состояний на расстоянии
В эксперименте ученые использовали два SiV-центра, расположенных в разных лабораториях. Каждый центр был интегрирован с нанофотонным резонатором и обладал двумя кубитами — электронным и ядерным. Для создания запутанных состояний между электронными спинами двух центров, исследователи применили специальный тип «ворота» — (e-γ gate).
Данные «ворота» реализуют последовательность микроволновых импульсов, которые управляют электронным спином SiV-центра, запутывая его состояние с состоянием фотона. Фотон, несущий информацию о запутанном состоянии, затем передаётся другому SiV-центру, где происходит аналогичная операция. В результате этой последовательности действий, ученые получают запутанную пару электронных спинов, разделенных значительным пространством.
Длинная память для квантовой информации
Однако электронные спины имеют ограниченное время когерентности, что ограничивает дальность распространения запутанности. Для преодоления этой трудности исследователи использовали ядерные спины 29Si, которые обладают значительно более продолжительным временем жизни.
Чтобы запутать ядерные спины, ученые использовали другой тип «ворот» — PHONE gate (photon-nucleus entangling gate). Данный «ворота» напрямую связывает ядерный спин с фотоном, используя электронный спин в качестве «помощника». Для повышения надежности создания запутанных состояний, ученые разработали методику обнаружения и исправления ошибок, возникающих во время реализации PHONE gate.
Передача запутанных состояний через 40 километров
Для передачи запутанных состояний на значительные расстояния требуется использование волоконно-оптических каналов. Однако свет, излучаемый SiV-центрами, имеет длину волны 737 нанометров, что приводит к большим потерям сигнала в оптическом волокне.
Чтобы обойти это ограничение, исследователи использовали двунаправленное квантовое преобразование частоты (QFC). QFC позволяет сдвинуть длину волны фотона из видимого спектра в инфракрасный, который имеет значительно более низкие потери в оптическом волокне.
Благодаря QFC, ученым удалось передать запутанные состояния ядерных спинов через волокно длиной до 40 километров. В дополнительном эксперименте они продемонстрировали работу системы в реальных условиях городской среды, передавая запутанность через 35-километровую петлю оптического волокна, установленную в Бостоне.
Перспективы развития
Результаты работы демонстрируют огромный потенциал систем на основе SiV-центров для построения практичных квантовых сетей. В будущем данная технология может быть использована в разнообразных сферах, включая безопасную квантовую коммуникацию, распределенные квантовые вычисления, и квантовые сенсоры.
