В каменноугольный период, около 300-320 миллионов лет назад, леса планеты кишели удивительными арахнидами. Помимо знакомых нам пауков, сенокосцев и скорпионов, существовали и другие, более странные создания, напоминавшие пауков. Недавно обнаруженная в знаменитом местонахождении Мазон-Крик, штат Иллинойс, окаменелость открывает нам еще одну страницу из «паучьей» истории каменноугольного периода.
Это был крупный, похожий на паука арахнид, с устрашающими шипами на ногах — вероятно, для защиты от хищников. Его овальное тело, сегментированное брюшко и анальный бугорок на конце туловища напоминают черты современных арахнид, но уникальная комбинация признаков не позволяет отнести его ни к одному из известных отрядов, как современных, так и вымерших.
Ученые дали этому загадочному существу имя Douglassarachne acanthopoda, что можно перевести как «колючий паук Дугласа». Родовое имя дано в честь семьи Дуглас, которая передала окаменелость в дар Филдовскому музею естественной истории, а видовое — отсылает к острым шипам на ногах.
Douglassarachne был крупным арахнидом, достигающим 15 миллиметров в длину. Его головогрудь покрыта цельным щитом треугольной формы, а на спинной стороне виден бугорок — возможно, основание глаза. Брюшко разделено на 8 сегментов с загнутыми краями. Ноги Douglassarachne — настоящая «колючая проволока»! Они покрыты рядами длинных, слегка изогнутых шипов. К сожалению, передние конечности, ротовой аппарат и грудная область не сохранились, что не позволяет точно определить его систематическое положение.
Ученые предполагают, что Douglassarachne относится к Pantetrapulmonata — группе, включающей пауков и их ближайших родственников. Для Pantetrapulmonata характерно сужение области между головогрудью и брюшком. Возможно, Douglassarachne был представителем вымершей ветви Pantetrapulmonata, не оставившей потомков.
Открытие Douglassarachne acanthopoda — очередное свидетельство удивительного разнообразия арахнид каменноугольного периода. В то время бок о бок с «современными» представителями скорпионов, сенокосцев и пауков существовали и вымершие отряды — Trigonotarbida, Phalangiotarbida и Haptopoda.
Douglassarachne, с его уникальным строением ног, еще раз подчеркивает, что эволюция арахнид в каменноугольном периоде была невероятно «творческой». Мир того времени был полон удивительных существ, изучение которых помогает нам лучше понять историю жизни на Земле.
Почему у Douglassarachne такие устрашающие шипы на ногах? Неужели хищники каменноугольного периода были настолько опасны?
Конечно, жизнь в каменноугольном лесу была полна опасностей. Среди хищников были крупные амфибии, рептилиоморфы и даже гигантские многоножки. Шипы на ногах Douglassarachne могли служить эффективной защитой от покушений, делая его неудобной, колючей добычей. Вспомните современных дикобразов или ежей — их колючки тоже служат отличной защитой!
Почему так сложно определить систематическое положение Douglassarachne? Неужели палеонтологи не могут разобраться, кто он такой?
Окаменелости не всегда «щедры» на детали. В случае с Douglassarachne не сохранились передние конечности и ротовой аппарат. А ведь именно эти части тела несут важную информацию для классификации арахнид. Палеонтологи — не волшебники, они могут работать только с тем материалом, который у них есть.
Если Douglassarachne был таким уникальным, почему он вымер? Разве «уникальность» не помогает выживать?
В эволюции «уникальность» не всегда равно «успех». Иногда слишком узкая специализация может привести к вымиранию, если условия среды меняются. Возможно, Douglassarachne был слишком приспособлен к определенному типу леса, который исчез в результате глобальных изменений климата. А может быть, он просто не выдержал конкуренции с более «универсальными» видами.
