Многие наверняка не раз слышали о том, что не бывает в мире
абсолютно идентичных снежинок. Якобы они настолько же уникальны, как и
отпечатки пальцев у людей. Но почему не существует двух одинаковых снежинок и
насколько это правда?
Рассмотрим далее.
От чего зависит форма снежинок?
Снежные кристаллы начинают формироваться в соответствии с
конкретной схемой, которая зависит от различных факторов. Главный из них, конечно
— температура. Формирование крупных кристаллов может занять около часа. За это
время факторы влияния могут измениться, что оказывает влияние на развитие
снежинок.
Как удалось выяснить в ходе специальных исследований,
привычная глазу шестиугольная форма «звездочки» является далеко не
единственной. Снежинки образуются поэтапно:
- увеличиваются;
- расширяются;
- формируют дополнительные детали.
Симметрия получается из-за особого расположения молекул
воды. Но иногда снежные кристаллы могут быть и совершенно другой формы,
например, треугольной, и не всегда правильной. Так, например, чтобы
образовалась снежинка в форме равностороннего треугольника, должны быть
соблюдены определенные условия: температура -14С и конкретный уровень
влажности. На форму влияет, в том числе, угол падения.
Как это удалось доказать
Изучением формы снежинок почти всю жизнь занимался обычный
американский фермер Уилсон Бентли, который получил известность, как фотограф
снежинок. Все началось с того, что любознательный мальчик поймал на приборное
стекло своего подержанного микроскопа снежинку и успел рассмотреть ее, пока та
не успела растаять.
В дальнейшем уже юноша получил в распоряжение громоздкий
фотоаппарат и начал ставить различные опыты. Сфотографировать снежинку даже
сейчас, при наличии современного смартфона, задача совсем непростая, а в конце
19 века это и вовсе был тяжелый труд.
Но то были не просто обычные снимки, а целые научные
исследования. Свои фотографии Бентли делал в неотапливаемой пристройке, а для
получения лучшего контраста снимал пойманные снежинки на отрезе черного
бархата. Плюс ко всему, он не только отмечал внешний вид снежинок в специальном
блокноте, но и подробно описывал все погодные условия, при которых получился
такой снежный кристалл, вплоть до направления и скорости ветра.
Свои опыты Уильям Бентли проводил каждую зиму на протяжении
почти целого полувека, пока не умер в 1931 году от простуды. В его архиве
накопились тысячи снимков снежинок. Уже после его смерти свет увидела книга под
названием «Снежные кристаллы», в которой, кроме прочего, было опубликовано
более 2 тыс. фотографий. Таким образом, обычному сыну фермера удалось не только
продемонстрировать, что идентичных снежинок не бывает, но и пояснить, от чего
зависит их форма.
Почему даже «снежинки-близнецы» — все равно разные?
Крайне редко в природе встречаются два очень похожих снежных
кристалла. Точно также как это происходит с совершенно разными, но очень
похожими внешне людьми.
К примеру, в Книге Гиннеса отмечен случай, произошедший в
конце 80-х годов прошлого века. Метеоролог Нэнси Найт случайно обнаружила под
микроскопом пару абсолютно идентичных внешне снежных кристаллов во время
исследования образцов, полученных в период сильного шторма, случившегося в
штате Висконсин.
Однако известный американский астрофизик Итан Сигел опроверг
уникальность этого снимка. Он пояснил: полностью одинаковые внешне объекты
должны быть таковыми и на молекулярном уровне, но такое невозможно.
Дело в том, что обычная снежинка содержит примерно 1018
водных молекул. Число комбинаций, составленное таким количеством молекул,
близится к бесконечности.
Идентичные снежинки все-таки бывают
Абсолютно похожие друг на друга снежные кристаллы
действительно существуют, однако не в природе, а в лабораторных условиях. Так,
профессор Кеннет Либбрехт, работающий в технологическом институте в Калифорнии,
открыл способ выращивания синтетических снежинок, которые являются полноценными
копиями.
Чтобы это сделать, необходимо поместить молекулы воды в абсолютно
аналогичные условия для формирования:
- температура;
- степень влажности;
- уровень турбулентности воздуха.
На образование синтетически созданных снежинок, как и в
случае с настоящими, может уйти до часа времени.
