что алмазы образуются под высоким давлением и температурой, и отчасти именно
поэтому они так ценны. Но теперь ученые создали алмазы в лаборатории под
постоянным давлением всего за 15 минут.
По сути, алмазы — это просто старый углерод, который подвергся огромному
давлению и температуре, в результате чего атомы кристаллизовались в
определенную структуру. На Земле единственное место с подходящими природными
условиями находится глубоко в мантии, на глубине сотен миль. Лишь позже они поднимаются ближе к поверхности, путешествуя автостопом во время извержений
вулканов, что делает их довольно редкими. Добавьте к этому самый коварный маркетинг в истории, и вы получите очень
востребованный маленький камень.
Ученые выращивают алмазы в лабораториях на протяжении десятилетий,
но обычно для этого по-прежнему нужны экстремальные условия — давление почти 50
000 атмосфер и температура около 1500 °C. Но теперь новая технология
позволяет производить алмазы при нормальном уровне давления и более низких
температурах.
Новый метод, разработанный
командой Института фундаментальных наук (IBS) и Ульсанского национального
института науки и технологий (UNIST) в Южной Корее, синтезирует алмазы с
использованием жидкометаллического сплава галлия, железа, никеля и кремния. В
резервуаре емкостью 9 л эта металлическая смесь подвергается
воздействию метана и газообразного водорода при температуре 1025 °C.
Через 15 минут газ выходит из системы, а на днище образуется алмазная пленка.
Обычно для получения синтетических алмазов необходимы «затравочные частицы»,
чтобы первые атомы углерода зацепились за них и сформировали вокруг них алмаз.
Но в этом случае следы кремния в жидком металле, похоже, помогают атомам
углерода образовывать кластеры. Конечным результатом является очень чистый
алмаз.
Теперь исследователи планируют
изучить другие жидкие металлические сплавы и газы и даже твердые углероды,
чтобы определить, насколько хорошо они могут производить алмазы. Хотя
маловероятно, что в ближайшее время мы будем носить алмазы, выращенные в чанах
с жидким металлом, сначала они могут найти применение в промышленности.
