Банка, остров у побережья Суматры, известен как «Остров олова». Его недра богаты этим ценным металлом, который используется в производстве электроники, в том числе смартфонов. Но за блеском олова скрывается мрачная реальность — конфликт между человеком и одним из самых грозных хищников планеты — гребнистым крокодилом.
В прошлом, жители Банки считали, что каждый клочок болота и эстуария охраняет «пуака» — гигантский крокодил, властитель рыб, креветок и… женщин. Его рев вселял ужас даже в самых отважных воинов. Люди не осмеливались вторгаться в владения пуаки, а крокодилы редко покидали свои реки.
Сегодня рев пуаки заглушает грохот дизельных двигателей, неустанно качающих олово из недр острова. Некогда девственные реки превратились в ландшафт, напоминающий лунный: вырытые старателями ямы, «кулонги», заполняются водой, образуя новые, искусственные водоемы. Именно они становятся ареной ожесточенного конфликта.
В поисках легкой добычи, крокодилы заселяют кулонги, все чаще сталкиваясь с людьми, которые моют в них олово, ловят рыбу или просто купаются. Рози, житель деревни Телак, на себе испытал ярость пуаки. После трудового дня на реке Антане, он решил освежиться в кулонге, где и был атакован крокодилом. Хищник перекусил его икру, оставив Рози инвалидом.
Травма не только физическая, но и психологическая. Рози не может смотреть на изображения крокодилов, не говоря уже о том, чтобы вернуться к работе на реке.
Его история — не единственная. По данным проекта CrocBITE, с 2016 года в провинции Банка-Белитунг зарегистрировано 111 случаев конфликта человека и крокодила. Большинство из них происходили в районах добычи олова.
Олово или жизнь?
Для жителей Банки олово — это и благословение, и проклятие. С одной стороны, добыча этого металла дает им средства к существованию. С другой, она разрушает экосистему, лишая крокодилов естественной среды обитания и провоцируя конфликты.
Проблема усугубляется тем, что кустарная добыча олова часто ведется незаконно, без учета экологических норм и правил безопасности. Старатели работают в заповедных лесах, на землях, принадлежащих горнодобывающим компаниям, и даже на рекультивированных участках, где добыча запрещена.
Правительство пытается решить проблему, предлагая старателям партнерские схемы и лицензии на народную добычу (IPR). Однако эти меры малоэффективны, так как легальная добыча не приносит столько же дохода, как незаконная.
Блуждание в лабиринте решений
Ситуация осложняется еще и тем, что крокодилы обладают удивительным «инстинктом голубя» — способностью возвращаться на свою территорию, преодолевая сотни километров. Переселение крокодилов в другие районы, как показала практика, не решает проблему, а лишь усугубляет ее.
Brandon Sideleau, исследователь крокодилов из США, считает, что единственный выход — создание заповедных зон, где добыча олова будет запрещена. По его мнению, такие зоны могли бы быть созданы на реке Батурусе и в районе плотины Пиче.
В 2021 году власти провинции Банка-Белитунг предложили создать заповедник для крокодилов на 157 гектарах бывших горнодобывающих земель. Однако дальнейшая судьба этого проекта неизвестна.
Без данных — как вслепую
Одной из главных проблем, препятствующих эффективной защите крокодилов, является отсутствие актуальных данных об их численности. Последняя оценка популяции была проведена в 1996 году Международным союзом охраны природы (IUCN), который присвоил гребнистому крокодилу статус «вызывающий наименьшие опасения».
Amir Hamidy, директор Секретариата научного органа по биоразнообразию Национального агентства по исследованиям и инновациям (BRIN), считает, что без проведения масштабных исследований невозможно разработать действенные меры по регулированию конфликта человека и крокодила.
Необходимо не только оценить численность популяции, но и изучить особенности конфликта в разных районах, а также социально-экономические факторы, которые толкают людей на незаконную добычу олова.
В поисках баланса
Конфликт человека и крокодила на острове Банка — это не просто борьба за ресурсы, это столкновение двух миров, двух способов существования. Человек, ослепленный жаждой наживы, вторгается во владения хищника, нарушая хрупкий баланс природы.
Чтобы сохранить и людей, и крокодилов, необходимо найти компромисс, основанный на научном подходе, уважении к природе и понимании того, что и человек, и крокодил — звенья одной цепи, разорвав которую, мы рискуем потерять нечто большее, чем просто олово.

Образ «пуаки», властвующего над женщинами, мог служить своеобразным предостережением, напоминанием о необходимости быть осторожными вблизи водоемов.

Они, конечно, не используют магнитное поле. Скорее всего, крокодилы ориентируются по знакомым запахам, течениям и другим признакам, которые помогают им определить свое местоположение и найти путь к родной территории.

Запрет на добычу олова в заповедных зонах неизбежно приведет к социально-экономическим проблемам.
