В мире лингвистики отрицание — это словно тень, падающая на слово. Оно не просто отменяет его значение, а добавляет новый нюанс, новый оттенок. В работе, опубликованной в PLOS Biology, исследователи рассказали, как мозг человека интерпретирует отрицательные прилагательные, отслеживая нейронную активность испытуемых с помощью магнитоэнцефалографии (МЭГ).

Результаты показали, что мозг сначала интерпретирует отрицательные фразы как утвердительные (например, «не хороший» воспринимается как «хороший»). Но затем интерпретация корректируется, двигаясь в направлении, но не достигая полного противоположного значения (например, «не хороший» приближается к «плохой», но не становится им).
Чтобы подтвердить эти выводы, исследователи провели второй эксперимент с использованием магнитоэнцефалографии (MEG), которая позволяет отслеживать активность мозга в реальном времени. В этом эксперименте участники также читали фразы с прилагательными и модификаторами, но отвечали «да» или «нет» на вопрос, соответствует ли тестовое значение (например, 6 на шкале от 0 до 8) общему смыслу фразы.
Анализ данных MEG подтвердил выводы первого эксперимента: отрицание не инвертирует представление прилагательных, но ослабляет его. То есть, мозг не заменяет «не хороший» на «плохой», а сокращает «хорошее» до умеренного значения.
Кроме того, анализ активности мозга в бета-диапазоне (от 12 до 30 Гц), которая часто связана с тормозными процессами в мозге, показал, что отрицание активирует сенсомоторные области мозга, особенно в левом полушарии.
Результаты исследования впервые демонстрируют, как отрицание влияет на обработку абстрактных понятий в мозге. Исследователи отклонили гипотезу о том, что отрицание полностью инвертирует смысл слов. Напротив, они доказали, что отрицание действует как «ослабитель». Этот механизм может быть связан с работой тормозных систем мозга, которые сдерживают изначальную активацию.

В этом и заключается загадка отрицания. Мозг не «переключает» смысл как выключатель, а «приглушает» его, делая более размытым. Мы не воспринимаем «не холодный» как «теплый», мы воспринимаем его как «не холодный», но при этом уже подсознательно включаем в смысл и «теплый». Это словно прозрачный фильтр, наложенный на слово, который меняет его цвет, но не делает его совершенно другим.
Если мозг обрабатывает отрицание так сложно, то почему нам так легко использовать «не» в речи?
Это отличная иллюстрация того, как наш мозг адаптируется к сложностям мира. Хотя мы не задумываемся о нейронных процессах, когда говорим «не», наш мозг автоматически включает механизм «приглушения» смысла. Это подобно тому, как мы не думаем о физических процессах, когда идём, но наш мозг координирует работу мышц и суставов, чтобы мы могли двигаться.
