Исследователи из старейшего в США Гарвардского университета сообщают, что получены доказательства падения метеорита в юго-восточной части Африки (район Барбертон Гринстоун Белт). Согласно их исследованию, упавший на Землю миллиарды лет назад метеорит, скорее всего, послужил причиной зарождения простейших форм жизни.
Исследователи изучили остатки горных пород из зеленокаменного пояса Барбертон, который известен как один из древнейших и наиболее хорошо сохранившихся фрагментов континентальной коры. Он расположен на восточной окраине кратона Каапвааль, который когда-то был частью суперконтинента Ваальбара, существовавшего от 3,6 до 2,2 миллиардов лет назад, прежде чем разделился на два отдельных континента.
Команда исследователей собрала 214 образцов горных пород с глубины около 5 м (16 футов) под местом падения метеорита и до 8 м (26 футов) над этим местом в районе, называемом Холм Брюса и Умбаумба.
Они проанализировали 83 образца на наличие основных, следовых и редкоземельных элементов, а другие части были проанализированы на наличие изотопов органического углерода, которые можно использовать для отслеживания происхождения и истории объекта.
«Наша работа показывает, что в глобальном масштабе ранняя жизнь могла выиграть от притока питательных веществ и доноров электронов, а также от новых условий окружающей среды в результате крупных импактных событий», — отмечают исследователи в своём отчёте.
