В истории фотографии есть немало удивительных изобретений, но «камера-мамонт», созданная американским коммерческим фотографом Джорджем Лоуренсом в 1900 году, занимает в ней особое место. Это устройство поражало воображение современников своими размерами и возможностями, став настоящим технологическим прорывом для ушедшей эпохи.
История создания монструозной камеры началась с амбициозного заказа железнодорожной компании Chicago & Alton Railway. Они запустили новый роскошный поезд «Alton Limited» на маршруте Чикаго — Сент-Луис и хотели получить его фотографию невиданных доселе размеров — не менее 8 футов (2.44 м) в длину. Причем снимок должен был быть сделан одним кадром, без склеивания нескольких изображений.
Такая фотография была нужна компании для участия во Всемирной выставке 1900 года в Париже. Она была крупнейшим событием того времени, ее посетили свыше 50 млн человек, и этот рекорд держался в течение следующих 67 лет. Участие в парижской выставке было отличным способом заявить о себе на весь мир, но везти туда целый поезд было бы чрезвычайно сложной и дорогой затеей, и вместо этого Chicago & Alton Railway решили приготовить не менее впечатляющую альтернативу.

К примеру, в 1906 году Лоуренс заработал не менее 15 000 долларов (~ 508 тыс. долларов в наши дни) на фотографии Сан-Франциско, сделанной с использованием воздушного змея.
Результат трудов Андерсона и Лоуренса поражал воображение, и современники прозвали это чудо техники камерой-мамонтом («Mammoth Camera»). Её общий вес составлял 635 кг, из которых 408 кг приходилось на саму камеру, а 227 кг — на кассету для фотопластины. Размеры негатива были колоссальными — 2.44 х 1.37 метра. Для камеры были изготовлены специальные объективы Carl Zeiss: широкоугольный с фокусным расстоянием 1.68 м и телеобъектив с фокусным расстоянием 3.05 м.
Конструкция впечатляла своей сложностью и продуманностью. Меха состояли из трех слоев: внешнего покрытия из толстой резины, подкладки из черного холста и дополнительного слоя из светонепроницаемого черного материала. Каждая складка была усилена деревянной планкой толщиной 6 мм. На создание этой конструкции ушло два рулона резины, более 150 литров клея и 152 метра деревянных досок.
Кассета для фотопластины имела деревянную шторку с тканевой подкладкой, которая обеспечивала полную светонепроницаемость. На изготовление шторки ушло 7.4 м² древесины ясеня толщиной 9.5 мм. Стеклянные негативы произвела компания The Cramer Company из Сент-Луиса. По сохранившейся информации, комплект из 12 штук стоил $1800. Таким образом, каждый экземпляр обходился в $150, что эквивалентно ~ $4600 сегодня.
Чтобы сделать снимок, была нужна целая команда. Для переноски мамонт-камеры были необходимы усилия 15 человек. Для установки гигантской стеклянной пластины требовалась слаженная работа четырех человек, а еще шестеро управляли фокусировочными мехами и объективом.
Первое испытание камеры-мамонта состоялось весной 1900 года. Ее транспортировка была отдельной операцией: сначала камеру доставили на вокзал, затем перевезли на открытой платформе за город, и наконец, 15 человек несли ее последние ~ 400 метров до места съемки. Выдержка при фотографировании поезда «Alton Limited» составляла 2.5 минуты.
Результат превзошел все ожидания. Три экземпляра фотографии были отправлены на Всемирную выставку 1900 года в Париже. Однако организаторы выставки поначалу не поверили, что такой большой и четкий снимок мог быть сделан одной камерой. Потребовалось вмешательство французского консула в Нью-Йорке, который лично приехал в Чикаго, чтобы удостовериться в существовании камеры и посмотреть, как она работает.
