Оказалось, что мужчины, которые потребляли менее 40 процентов общей энергии из углеводов, подвергались значительно более высокому риску преждевременного ухода из жизни от всех причин, а в особенности из-за рака. При этом связь наблюдалась независимо от типа углеводов. Напротив, для женщин такие же последствия (кроме повышенной вероятности рака) наблюдались при высоком потреблении углеводов (более 65 процентов).
В то же время у мужчин с высоким потреблением жиров (более 35 процентов от общей энергии) был более высокий риск летального исхода от рака. Низкое потребление ненасыщенных жиров у мужчин было связано повышенной вероятностью ухода из жизни от всех причин. А высокое потребление жиров негативно сказывалось на продолжительности жизни у женщин.
Авторы подчеркивают, что людям следует придерживаться сбалансированной диеты, а не ограничивать потребление углеводов или жиров.
