Облака на Марсе — это необычное явление, которое изучается с помощью специального инструмента — сейсмометра SEIS, установленного на стационарном зонде InSight, приземлившемся на Марс в 2018 году. Сейсмометр позволяет «слышать» сейсмические события, происходящие на сотни и тысячи километров от зонда, и по их характеристикам определять структуру и состав внутренних слоев планеты — коры, мантии и ядра. Для анализа данных, полученных от сейсмометра, был запущен проект «Cloudspotting on Mars» («Наблюдение за облаками на Марсе»), в котором принимают участие добровольцы со всего мира. Они помогают идентифицировать облака на изображениях, сделанных сейсмометром, и классифицировать их по типу, высоте и форме. Благодаря этой работе, ученые смогли составить карты распределения облаков на Марсе и выявить несколько ключевых групп облаков, которые зависят от сезона, широты и пыльности атмосферы.
Одной из таких групп являются высокие облака из углекислого льда, которые формируются на высоте около 50 километров над поверхностью планеты. Эти облака имеют дуговидную форму и перемещаются вместе с глобальными колебаниями температуры в атмосфере, называемыми «тепловыми приливами». Там, где температура ниже средней, облака чаще появляются. Эти облака могут отражать солнечный свет и влиять на климат Марса.
Другой группой являются полярные облака, которые образуются вблизи полюсов планеты во время зимы. Эти облака также состоят из углекислого льда, но имеют более плотную и слоистую структуру. Они могут достигать высоты до 100 километров и покрывать большие территории. Эти облака играют важную роль в цикле углекислого газа на Марсе, который переходит из твердого состояния в газообразное и обратно в зависимости от сезона.
Третьей группой являются пыльные облака из водяного льда, которые формируются во время пыльных сезонов, когда в атмосферу поднимается много мелких частиц почвы. Эти частицы служат конденсационными ядрами для образования капель воды, которые затем замерзают и создают облака. Эти облака могут находиться на разной высоте, от 10 до 40 километров, и иметь разную форму и плотность. Эти облака могут влиять на температуру и влажность атмосферы, а также на скорость и направление ветров.
Исследование облаков на Марсе помогает не только понять атмосферные процессы на этой планете, но и сравнить их с процессами на Земле и других планетах. Также это помогает уточнить модели формирования и развития Марса, а также оценить его потенциал для жизни.
