Сообщается, что буквально за несколько месяцев в Красном море были повреждены 4 высоко загруженных интернет-кабеля из 15 крупнейших. На эти 4 соединения приходится почти 20% всего мирового трафика между Европой и Азией, что существенно скажется на скорости работы. Все кабели располагались в Баб-эль-Мандебском проливе и размещались на глубине около 100 метров, что позволило повредить их без специальных аппаратов. Среди поврежденных кабелей оказались Seacom — связывающий Кению и Египет. EIG создан для связи Южной Европы и Египта, Арабских Эмиратов и части Индии. А кабель AAE-1 использовался для связи Восточной Азии и Европы.
В момент повреждения кабелей телекоммуникационные компании смогли перенаправить основной трафик на запасные линии, но потеря столь продолжительных линий, конечно же, скажется на скорости работы. Ущерб значительный, а восстановление может занять довольно длительное время.
На карте видно, что большая часть кабелей размещается в узком месте пролива.
Сообщается, что восстановительные работы займут не менее 8 недель, при этом глубина залегания кабеля в некоторых местах значительно ниже 100 метров, что накладывает дополнительные сложности. Самый значимый из всех поврежденных кабелей ААЕ-1, так как он самый длинный, а это почти 25 тыс километров и соединяет Европейские страны с большей частью Азии. Основная нагрузка по передаче данных была именно на нем.
