Канадский школьник Бренден Сенер (Brenden Sener) разработал проект экспериментальной установки для проверки истинности легенды об изобретательности греческого математика Архимеда. Одна из легенд (ей больше 2000 лет) гласит, что Архимед с помощью зеркал поджигал римские корабли.
Ученик 8 класса школы Мэтьюз Холл (Matthews Hall) выдвинул гипотезу, что вогнутые зеркала можно использовать для фокусировки световой энергии на мишени и что температура мишени будет увеличиваться по мере увеличения количества зеркал.
Для проверки состоятельности выдвинутой гипотезы им была собрана специальная экспериментальная установка, в состав которой входили: 1) инфракрасный термометр, 2) зажимы, 3) нагревательные лампы (50 Вт, 100 Вт), 4) вогнутые зеркала (четыре), 5) мишенная бумага, 6) подставка для термометра, 7) таймер на 3 минуты. Целью его работы была оценка принципа, лежащего в основе луча смерти Архимеда, на предмет его правдоподобия с использованием этой установки.
Основываясь на результатах, полученных в ходе проведенных экспериментов, он согласился с ранее полученными результатами группы студентов Массачусетского технологического института (США), которых также интересует этот вопрос. Ему экспериментально удалось подтвердить, что при достаточно сильном источнике тепла и больших зеркалах, сфокусированных под идеальным углом, возгорание может быть возможным.
Следует заметить, что его познавательные успехи отмечены в 2023 году несколькими Золотыми медалями научных ярмарок и Премией Лондонской публичной библиотеки за развитие интереса детей к науке и технологиям. С более подробной информацией по этой теме можно ознакомиться на этом веб-сайте.
