Каждый год 1 марта отмечается Всемирный день кошек. Питомцам демонстрируют любовь и почитание. Но держали ли в прошлом народы кошек в качестве домашних животных? Недавнее исследование показывает, что представители семейства кошачьих были гораздо большей частью общества викингов, чем считалось ранее. Викинги даже брали своих кошек с собой в дальние путешествия в соседние страны.
В статье, опубликованной в журнале Current Swedish Archaeology, Маттиас Топлак представляет переоценку роли домашних кошек в Скандинавии эпохи викингов. Он бросает вызов традиционным интерпретациям, сформированным средневековой мифологией, и показывает, как археологические свидетельства дают более детальный взгляд на значение кошек в обществе викингов.
Если обратиться только к письменным источникам о кошках у скандинавов, то можно найти лишь несколько упоминаний, большинство из которых связаны с негативными силами, колдовством и демоническими атрибутами. Например, в Саге об Эрике Рыжем есть гренландская колдунья, которая описывается как носящая черную шляпу из овечьей кожи, подбитую кошачьей шкурой, и перчатки из кошачьей кожи. В историях из скандинавской мифологии богиня Фрейя также изображена верхом на колеснице, запряженной кошками. Однако Топлак считает, что это изображение не то, чем кажется:
«Это может указывать на то, что ассоциация кошек с Фрейей берет свое начало не в мифологии эпохи викингов, а может быть истолкована как интерполяция из христианских или античных традиций. Колесница, запряженная кошками, по-видимому, является адаптацией античного образа женских божеств плодородия или богинь-матерей с повозкой, запряженной большими кошками, такими как львы или пантеры, например Кибелой или Артемидой».
Большинство саг и древнескандинавского эпоса были записаны только в XIII веке, во времена, когда христианство было доминирующей религией в Скандинавии, в то время как верований эпохи викингов все больше избегали. Топлак заявляет, что негативная ассоциация кошек в скандинавской литературе может «не отражать верования эпохи викингов, а быть результатом христианского влияния».
Маттиас Топлак исследует свидетельства использования кошачьего меха для изготовления одежды и его отсутствие на некоторых археологических памятниках, подчеркивая потенциальную значимость кошек как компаньонов и домашних животных.
«В то время как мы видим археологические останки кошек, с которых снимали шкуру ради их меха, мы также все чаще обнаруживаем присутствие кошек, похороненных вместе с людьми. Их можно найти в захоронениях мужчин и женщин, а со временем и детей, иногда они являются единственной подходящей могилой для них», — рассказывает ученый.
Топлак подчеркивает, что «в более поздней эпохе викингов кошачьи кости также стали чаще встречаться в обычных захоронениях, по-видимому, с тех пор, как кошки утвердились в качестве постоянного элемента домашней фауны в Скандинавии в XI веке».
Викингов с высоким статусом хоронили с разнообразными вещами, начиная от оружия и заканчивая предметами домашнего обихода, а также с животными. Но почему их хоронили с кошками? Топлак исключает идею о том, что они были погребены в качестве потенциальных источников пищи, поскольку кошек редко употребляли в пищу в Скандинавии, за исключением случаев голода. Также, по его словам, в этом нет какого-либо особого религиозного значения. Вместо этого автор предполагает, что норманны держали кошек в качестве домашних компаньонов из-за их способности ловить мышей и хотели взять их с собой в загробную жизнь.
Есть и другие свидетельства о более тесных связях между кошками и людьми в эпоху викингов. К ним относится изображение кошачьего мотива «хватающего зверя» на мечах викингов и находка в крупнейшем торговом центре берсерков в Швеции Бирке фигурки кошки, сделанной из янтаря, которая могла быть детской игрушкой.
«Картина роли и функций кошек в обществе эпохи викингов, представленная археологическими, а также историческими и более поздними мифологическими источниками, весьма неоднозначна. Кошки фигурируют в качестве погребального инвентаря в захоронениях высокого статуса как женщин, так и мужчин», — утверждает Топлак. Он добавляет, что «питомцев содержали для борьбы с вредителями, убивали ради меха, и мифологические традиции связывают их с особой культовой ролью, связанной с магией и женским плодородием.
