Тибетское нагорье возвышается более чем на 4000 метров над уровнем моря и по праву считается одним из самых сложных для жизни мест на планете. Большинство людей не выжило бы в подобных условиях и нескольких часов, но тибетцы приспособились к жизни и даже воспитывают детей.
Ученые уже давно пытались разгадать секрет выживания тибетцев, как им удается жить в условиях, не развивая кислородное голодание? Ответ оказался связан с уникальными генетическими изменениями, которые произошли в результате эволюции.
Исследования показали, что у тибетцев наблюдается повышенное содержание кислорода в гемоглобине, красных кровяных тельцах, которые переносят кислород по организму.
С момента появления первых поселенцев в Тибете прошло более 10 000 лет, за это время их тела претерпели изменения, позволившие им адаптироваться к атмосфере, которая для обычных людей стала бы губительной из-за низкого содержания кислорода.
Адаптация к нехватке кислорода на высоте одинакова для всех жителей и может быть измерена. Это отличный пример того, как и почему человечество развивается и эволюционирует.
Чтобы разгадать эту тайну, исследователи погрузились в изучение одного из маркеров эволюционной приспособленности — репродуктивного успеха. Женщины, которые рождают живых детей, передают свои черты следующему поколению. Черты, максимально повышающие успешность потомков в определенной среде, с большей вероятностью встречаются у женщин, способных выжить в тяжёлых условиях беременности, ещё более усложнённой особенностями региона.
Такие женщины, вероятнее всего, произведут на свет больше детей, которые получат от матерей в наследство генетические особенности, повышающие выживаемость потомства в определённых условиях, а их потомки получат ещё больший шанс дожить до зрелого возраста и передать эти черты своим детям.
Новая для учёных информация является наглядной иллюстрацией естественного отбора и она подчеркивает связь между приспособляемостью, выживанием и успешным продолжением рода в условиях постоянного стресса, характерного для высокогорных районов.
