Не исключено, что в обозримом будущем энергией будут обеспечены даже самые удалённые от цивилизации поселения мира — почти без использования ветра и солнца. Поддерживаемая главой OpenAI Сэмом Альтманом компания Oklo разрабатывает мини-реактор Aurora, больше похожий на футуристичный дачный домик.
В условиях дефицита энергии по всему миру инциденты с АЭС даже вроде новейших катастроф с АЭС «Фукусима» вынужденно признаны не особенно актуальными — атомная энергетика довольно эффективна, причём микрореактор обеспечивает почти нулевой выброс углекислого газа. В варианте Oklo будет использоваться и переработанное ядерное топливо, что повышает привлекательность инициативы.
Модель соответствует концепции «выстрелил и забыл» и сможет проработать до 20 лет без нужды перезаправки топливом. Микрореактор — не просто маркетинговый термин. Модель на эскизах действительна похожа на небольшой дачный домик и, как ожидается, будет обеспечивать всего 1,5 ГВт энергии. По оценкам экспертов, этого может хватить на энергоснабжение приблизительно 1 тыс. домохозяйств.
Новинка отлична даже от обычных «малых модульных реакторов» (SMR) — предполагается, что они обеспечат 50-125 МВт энергии. Для сравнения, реакторы классических АЭС обычно обеспечивают от 500 МВт до 8,2 ГВт.
Aurora имеет пассивные системы охлаждения, отсутствуют движущиеся части, система может самоохлаждаться и отключаться автоматически. Ядро можно полностью заменить в кратчайшие сроки, оно изначально конструируется сменным.
Реактор предназначен для использования HALEU-топлива, представляющего собой низкообогащённый уран-235 с несколько повышенной концентрацией в сравнении с ядерным топливом (в обычных реакторах концентрация, как правило, не превышает 5 %).
Побочным продуктом реакции является тепло, которое будет передаваться Aurora для повышения эффективности. Теплообменники могут передавать тепло для обогрева близлежащих зданий, опреснения воды, обогрева теплиц, производства и др.

Это и есть основная цель Oklo — внедрение атомных технологий там, где традиционные реакторы разместить невозможно. Речь идёт не только об отдалённых посёлках, но и, например, военных базах и исследовательских станциях.
Первый вариант реактора планируется запустить около Национальной лаборатории Айдахо (INL) к западу от Айдахо-Фолс. В 2020 году INL сообщила, что даст Oklo доступ к 5 т «восстановленного» отработавшего своё ядерного топлива от реактора EBR-II для строительства и демонстрации возможностей реактора Aurora.
Министерство энергетики уже одобрило проект, Oklo рассчитывает запустить первую коммерческую станцию к 2027 году. Стоит отметить, что пока действующих коммерческих микрореакторов не существует, но к их внедрению довольно близки компании вроде Westinghouse с её моделью eVinci.
