Околоземное пространство становится весьма «населённым» местом — до той степени, что космические аппараты начинают невольно угрожать друг другу. В NASA посетовали, что утром 28 февраля рядом с рабочим спутником TIMED аэрокосмического агентства чрезвычайно близко пролетел мёртвый разведывательный отечественный объект «Космос—2221».
TIMED изучает земную атмосферу с 2001 года и, как и российский аппарат, не способен маневрировать. Хотя в сообщении NASA не указывалось, как близко оказались спутники друг от друга, в занимающейся мониторингом космического пространства компании LeoLabs указывается, что летящие на высоте порядка 608 км от Земли спутники едва не столкнулись, пролетев друг от друга всего в 20 м.
Подобные «встречи» случаются в околоземном космосе всё чаще по мере того, как ближайшие орбиты заполняются новыми спутниками. Согласно информации Европейского космического агентства, сейчас на околоземной орбите уже присутствует порядка 11,5 тыс. аппаратов, но лишь 9 тыс. из них — действительно сохранили работоспособность.
Впрочем, это только верхушка айсберга. Вокруг Земли имеется целое облако «космического мусора» — 36,5 тыс. техногенных обломков размерами от 10 см, а также более 130 млн — более 1 мм. Некоторые эксперты прогнозируют, что в обозримом будущем полёты в космос могут стать чрезвычайно опасным для оборудования и людей занятием.
Даже очень маленькие фрагменты могут нанести серьёзные повреждения спутникам и даже МКС с учётом огромных скоростей, с которыми обломки движутся по орбитам. Например, обломки на высоте около 400 км (средней высоте движения МКС) движутся со скоростями более 28 тыс. км/ч.
Спутник «Космос-2221» массой 2000 кг запустили в 1992 году для радиоразведки, объект TIMED агентства NASA изучает особенности влияния Солнца и человеческой активности на мезосферу и термосферу/ионосферу нашей планеты.
