Недавно археологи сделали сенсационное открытие, которое перевернуло наши представления об Амазонии. Оказалось, что в лесистых подножиях Анд скрывается целая долина затерянных городов, в которых жило не менее 10 тысяч фермеров около 2000 лет назад. Это была сложная и организованная цивилизация, которая существовала примерно в то же время, что и Римская империя в Европе.
Как были обнаружены города?
Первые подозрения на наличие древних поселений в Амазонии появились у археолога Стефена Ростена более двух десятилетий назад. Он заметил серию земляных холмов и закопанных дорог в Эквадоре, но не мог понять, как все это связано. Он предполагал, что это могут быть следы народа Упано, о котором мало что известно.
Но только недавнее картографирование с помощью лазерной сенсорной технологии, называемой LiDAR, позволило раскрыть всю картину. LiDAR — это метод, который использует импульсы лазерного света, чтобы измерять расстояние до объектов на поверхности земли. С помощью этого метода можно сканировать большие территории и создать трехмерные модели ландшафта, игнорируя растительность.
Таким образом, археологи смогли увидеть, что земляные холмы и дороги — это часть плотной сети поселений и соединяющих их дорог, которые тянулись на десятки километров. Это была потерянная долина городов, которая существовала около 1000 лет, с 500 г. до н.э. до 300-600 г. н.э.
Как жили люди в этих поселениях?
Археологи предполагают, что города были заселены народом Упано, который принадлежал к культуре Шайри. Этот народ был известен своими уникальными керамическими сосудами, которые имели форму человеческих голов с выразительными чертами лица. Эти сосуды, называемые шайри-гуанако, использовались для хранения и переноски воды, а также для ритуальных целей.
Жилые и церемониальные здания были возведены на более чем 6000 земляных холмов, которые имели разную высоту и диаметр. Некоторые холмы были окружены кольцевыми рвами или стенами. На вершинах холмов находились площадки, на которых стояли деревянные или каменные конструкции. Археологи предполагают, что на этих площадках проводились общественные собрания, торговля, религиозные обряды и праздники.
Города были окружены сельскохозяйственными полями с дренажными каналами, которые обеспечивали урожайность в условиях тропического климата. Люди выращивали кукурузу, маниок, бобы, тыквы, ананасы и другие культуры. Они также занимались охотой, рыболовством и собирательством. Для перемещения между городами и полями они строили дороги, которые имели ширину до 10 метров и длину до 20 километров. Самые большие дороги были выровнены и укреплены камнями или деревом.
Хотя трудно оценить численность населения, исследователи считают, что в долине жило не менее 10 тысяч жителей, а возможно, и 15-30 тысяч в свой расцвет. Это сравнимо с населением Лондона в римскую эпоху, тогда крупнейшего города Британии. Это показывает, что общество Упано было сложным и организованным, с разделением труда, социальной иерархией и политической структурой.
