Интересно, что CO, будучи легколетучим веществом, не должен был сохраниться на поверхности большинства ТНО. Учёные предполагают, что он образовался в результате ионного облучения CO2 и других углеродсодержащих соединений, что подтверждается его преобладанием на поверхности более красных объектов CD-группы.
Открытие «Джеймса Уэбба» позволяет предположить, что BB и CD группы формировались в разных областях протопланетного диска. BB-группа, вероятно, образовалась ближе к Солнцу, где летучие вещества быстро испарялись, оставляя после себя преимущественно водяной лёд. CD-группа, напротив, формировалась дальше от Солнца, где CO2 и CH3OH могли существовать дольше и образовывать более сложные органические соединения.
Это открытие — лишь первый шаг в изучении состава ТНО. «Джеймс Уэбб» продолжит свои наблюдения, а учёным предстоит разгадать множество загадок, связанных с формированием и эволюцией этих ледяных миров, которые хранят в себе тайны рождения Солнечной системы.
