Исследователи из Японии разработали метод разделения хлопка и полиэстера в смешанном волокне. Это открытие может значительно улучшить переработку смешанного волокна, которое используется в растущих кучах выброшенной одежды. По словам Хироси Уямы, профессора химии полимеров из Университета Осаки, возглавлявшего исследовательскую группу, в этом методе используется тепло в устройстве, подобном микроволновой печи, и технология относительно дешевая и простая в реализации. В документе Министерства окружающей среды Японии, в котором цитируется исследование за 2022 финансовый год, говорится, что средний потребитель ежегодно выбрасывает 15 предметов одежды, из которых только 34 процента материалов перерабатываются или используются повторно. В документе Организации по развитию новых энергетических и промышленных технологий (NEDO) говорится, что смешанные и другие виды композитных волокон все чаще используются в одежде для удовлетворения потребительского спроса на моду и функциональность. «Разнообразие используемых материалов затрудняет разделение и разложение отдельных компонентов материала, и это представляет собой одно из самых больших препятствий для вторичной переработки», — говорится в документе NEDO.
Уяма поместил пряденое волокно обычной смеси хлопка и полиэстера в устройство для микроволнового облучения, которое похоже на микроволновую печь, вместе с жидким этиленгликолем. Для ускорения химической реакции был добавлен катализатор, и нагрев был включен на несколько минут. В процессе производства полиэфир разлагался, что позволило получить хлопок неповрежденным. В результате кристаллизации остаточная жидкость была выделена в виде бис(2-гидроксиэтил) терефталата/BHET. BHET, также известный как предшественник полиэтилентерефталата (ПЭТ), является сырьем, используемым для производства полиэфирных волокон и пластиковых бутылок. Степень извлечения хлопка составляла более 90 процентов, а чистота BHET достигала 100 процентов.
