В мире большого спорта существует множество
традиций, но, пожалуй, одна из самых зрелищных — это зажжение олимпийского
огня. Ритуал, который берет свое начало в древней Греции, сегодня повторяется
каждые четыре года. Первый огонь будущей олимпиады зажигают в Греции, там, где много
веков назад «родились» эти игры. А затем огонь уже следует в город, который в
этот раз имеет честь принимать олимпийские игры.
Идея зажигать олимпийский огонь с помощью
солнечных лучей — красивая и оригинальная. Будто Прометей из древних мифов
дарит людям огонь, правда, уже олимпийский. Такое «шоу» должно привести в
восторг зрителей во всем мире и еще больше привлечь внимание к большому
спортивному событию. Вот только сделать это, как оказалось, на так просто.
Главным «пиротехническим инструментом» в церемонии
зажжения олимпийского огня является параболическое зеркало. Зеркало собирает
падающие на него солнечные лучи в точке фокуса и как бы превращается в «концентратор
энергии», вся «мощь» которого направляется на факел. Однако создаваемая
параболическим зеркалом температура «на выходе» немногим больше ста градусов по
Цельсию. А олимпийский факел «заряжен» газом, температура самовоспламенения
которого около 450 градусов.
Поэтому с помощью параболического зеркала практически
невозможно «в полевых условиях» напрямую с помощью параболического зеркала «зажечь»
газ, используемый в олимпийском факеле. Причина кроется не только в температуре
самовоспламенения газа факела, но и в физических свойствах газов — они
прозрачны и поэтому не могут эффективно поглощать энергию солнечных лучей.
Чтобы с помощью параболического зеркала все же удалось воспламенить факельный
газ на церемонии, нагрев его до нужной температуры, необходимо какое-то время
факел держать в фокусе зеркала абсолютно неподвижно с точностью «наводки» в нужную
точку в доли миллиметра. Держа на церемонии зажжения факел в руке — добиться
этого невозможно.
Чтобы решить проблему, организаторы церемонии
прибегают к небольшой хитрости. Все, что требуется, это в фокусе зеркала
разместить специальную темную «мишень», которая эффективно поглощает световую
энергию, быстро нагревается и имеет небольшую температуру воспламенения. В олимпийский
факел вставляется небольшой кусок обычной фотопленки. Буквально пара витков
вокруг горелки. Дело в том, что температура самовоспламенения фотопленки —
всего около 130°C. Это значительно ниже, чем у газа, и достичь такой
температуры в фокусе параболического зеркала совсем не проблема. Когда
солнечные лучи, сконцентрированные параболическим зеркалом, падают на
фотопленку, она быстро нагревается до температуры самовоспламенения.
Воспламеняясь, пленка, в свою очередь, поджигает газ в факеле, и олимпийский
огонь может начинать свое путешествие из Греции в столицу новой олимпиады.
