Агентство NASA совместно с японским аэрокосмическим агентством JAXA намерены отправить на орбиту первый в мире спутник LignoSat, выполненный из древесины— предполагается, что такой аппарат будет более экобезопасным. Спутник из магнолии аппарат готовятся вывести на околоземную орбиту в следующем году.
В космосе дерево не гниёт и не горит, но оно обратится в обычный пепел при входе в земную атмосферу по возвращении. Ожидается, что такой «биоразлагаемый» материал будет активно применяться для создания космических аппаратов будущего. После испытания деревянных образцов на МКС ранее в этом году, учёные пришли к выводу, что спутники буквально из досок вполне подходят для использования в безвоздушном пространстве.
По данным учёных, в результате экспериментов с тремя образцами выяснилось, что они не деформируются в космосе несмотря на перепады температур и активное космическое излучение — дерево испытывали 10 месяцев. После тестов не выявлено трещин, искривлений, повреждения поверхности
Чтобы найти оптимальную породу дерева, испытывались образцы магнолии, вишнёвого дерева и берёзы, которые находились в специальном открытом блоке. В результате Магнолию выбрали за её устойчивость к обработке, вероятность того, что при изготовлении спутника она расколется, невелика.
Сегодня на околоземной орбите присутствуют объекты совокупной массой около 8440 метрических тонн, включая мёртвые спутники и остатки использованных ракетных ступеней. Учёные сообщают, что обломки металлов вроде титана и алюминия увеличивают светимость неба ночью в некоторых регионах на 10 %, генерируя дополнительное световое загрязнение, мешающее наблюдениям астрономов.
Кроме того, аппараты из металла дороги и представляют угрозу для МКС и пилотируемых кораблей, а если объекты достаточно велики для того, чтобы пережить возвращение в атмосферу, они могут напрямую угрожать и людям на Земле. Ожидается, что деревянные спутники будут создавать меньше мусора, а в атмосфере будут выгорать полностью.
