Именно такую колоссальную температуру плазмы смогла удержать лаборатория физики плазмы в Принстоне (PPPL), оформив рекорд по продолжительности работы термоядерного реактора. Что это значит? Это значит, что движение к термоядерной энергетике на уровне коммерческого применения продолжается достаточно бодрыми темпами. С использованием вольфрамовой оболочки реактор на Западе сумел поддерживать реакцию на протяжении шести минут.
Такие реакции обеспечивают энергией Солнце и делают жизнь на Земле возможной. Однако их воспроизведение здесь имеет свои крайности. С одной стороны, термояд может быть взорван внутри водородной бомбы, высвобождая столько энергии, чтобы испепелить целый город. С другой — он может идти с таким малым энерговыделением, что подобную установку демонстрировали на стенде General Electric на мировой выставке в Нью-Йорке в 1964, где она просто сливала атомы для публики.
Для действительной эффективности реактор должен не просто осуществлять синтез, но и делать это продолжительно. Также это должно происходить в таких масштабах, чтобы аппарат мог выдержать условия, схожие с условиями в недрах Солнца.
Из доклада PPPL Энергетического департамента США становится ясно, что недавно достигнутый показатель вольфрамовым токамаком WEST с поддержкой реакции в течение шести минут, при подведении энергии в 1,15 гигаджоулей и стабильной температуре центральных электронов в 4 кэВ, не устанавливает глобальный рекорд, поскольку другие токамаки выдавали лучшие результаты. Но WEST показывает себя лучше в практическом применении.
Расположенный в Кадараш, Буш-дю-Рон, Прованс, Франция, WEST является обновленной версией токамака Тора Supra. За шесть минут пуска плазма, удерживаемая в высокомощных магнитных полях, достигала 50 миллионов ºC (90 миллионов ºF) и получала на 15% больше энергии при удвоенной плотности.
Важным фактом стало использование вольфрама для обшивки камеры токамака. Графитовая облицовка предыдущих моделей поглощала топливо, что неприемлемо для коммерческих реакторов. Вольфрам же меньше поглощает, делая его более предпочтительным, хотя и вольфрамовые атомы могут попадать в плазму, что охлаждает ее.
WEST пока далек от коммерческого использования, говорят в PPPL, но эксперимент стал важным шагом, ведь лаборатория ищет оптимальные вольфрамовые решения. «Использование вольфрама усложняет процесс по сравнению с углеродом», отметил Дельгадо-Апарисио, глава передовых проектов PPPL и ведущий эксперт по физике и рентгеновской диагностике. «Это как поймать дома котенка против приближения к самому свирепому льву».

Почему термоядерный синтез даёт экологически чистую энергию?
Термоядерный реактор обеспечивает чистый источник энергии, потому что при термоядерном синтезе, который в нем происходит, выделяется энергия без сжигания ископаемого топлива, типа угля или нефти. В термоядерных реакторах используются легкие элементы, такие как изотопы водорода — дейтерий и тритий. Когда эти элементы сливаются, они образуют гелий и выделяют энергию. Гелий — неактивный газ, он безопасен и не загрязняет окружающую среду.
Кроме того, в таких реакциях не образуются долгоживущие радиоактивные отходы, которые являются проблемой для традиционных ядерных реакторов. Угроза радиационного заражения очень низка, а объем радиоактивных отходов настолько мал, что их можно легче контролировать.

В чем отличие термоядерного реактора от АЭС?
