Возможно, нет другой скульптуры, вызывающей столько восхищения и загадок, как Венера Милосская. Да и скульптуры, которая прочно ассоциируется с расцветом греческого античного искусства. А загадки начинаются сразу с названия: почему Венера, если греческая богиня была Афродита; почему Милосская (по острову Милос в Эгейском море), а выставляется во французском Лувре. Однако, ключевая загадка продолжает беспокоить исследователей и искусствоведов — куда пропали руки со скульптуры Венеры Милосской?
Эта изящная мраморная статуя женской фигуры, найденная в апреле 1820 года на небольшом (150 кв. км) острове Милос в Эгейском море, стала символом греческой классической красоты. Венера (на римский манер), в Древней Греции богиню красоты называли Афродита. А вот история её обнаружения содержит много противоречий и искаженных фактов.
Начнем с главного, обнаружили статую не археологи, а местный крестьянин при полевых работах (хотя есть несколько версий, но эта самая распространенная). Предметы древности всегда в цене, и статую он тут же решил выгодно продать, и было кому. Тут и турки (Греция была тогда под властью Османской империи) и французы, к которым в итоге древность и попала на корабль. Версия, что руки статуи обломали при схватке французских моряков с турками за эту добычу маловероятна. Есть свидетельства с мест событий, что статуя была найдена частями и уже сразу без рук. Повезло еще, что ее не пережгли на известь для строительства менее смышленые местные жители.
Детальные современные исследования так же показывают, что руки статуи были потеряны не 200 лет назад, а гораздо раньше, предположительно в римскую эпоху. Мрамор материал достаточно хрупкий и на открытом воздухе покрывается сетью микротрещин, в которые забивается пыль. И по патине на местах отрыва рук это видно. Есть версия, что руки были удалены в ходе античных реставрационных работ. Это не удивительно, статуя собрана из отдельных частей, соединенных железной арматурой.
А вот постамент изначально был, и даже содержал надписи о создателе. По надписи с автором (Александрос из Антиохии) можно уверенно датировать скульптуру первым — вторым веком до н.э. Но тогдашний управляющий музеем Лувр, дабы придать значимости этой находке, постамент припрятал (да так, что он не найден до сих пор). И объявил древность статуи в 5 веков до нашей эры (классическое греческое искусство). А автора считают неизвестным.
Историю с появлением Венеры Милосской в Лувре с современных позиций можно считать успешным рекламным пиар проектом. Главный французский музей тогда переживал не лучшую эпоху и нужно было мощное продвижение.
Кстати, до нас дошла, пожалуй, половина всей изначальной задумки скульптора. Во-первых, отсутствуют у Афродиты (Венеры) не только обе руки. Читаем описание музея Лувр: «…отсутствует левая рука, большая часть правой руки, левая ступня. На носу есть сколы. На спине много потертостей и сколов. Постамент был переделан в древности. Пучок волос был переклеен, а кончик носа заклеен заплаткой.» За эти 200 лет она пережила она несколько реставраций.
А изначально статуя высотой 2,04 м она была покрашена, имела множество бронзовых (или золотых) украшений (остались отверстия в мраморе для их крепления)… и была с руками, причем не просто так, а с функциональным значением. Которое тяжело уловить сейчас.
Интрига отсутствия рук — породила множество версий и реконструкций изначальной задумки автора статуи. Тут и зеркало, и щит, и конечно, яблоко раздора из греческой мифологи, парная статуя с Марсом и пр.
Но не так давно появилась обоснованная оригинальная гипотеза от ученой (Элизабет Уэйленд Барбер), археолога и специалиста по истории тканей. Поза на статуи Венеры очень похожа на женщину, которая сучит пряжу. Ткацкое ремесло было побочным занятием гетер. И есть прецеденты, когда они позировали для великих греческих скульпторов. И в руках у Венеры могли быть с приспособления для пряжи.
