Стены в доме в Фейкенхеме, Норфолк, построены из конопляной соломы, воды и земли или ила, — смеси, известной под названием Коб (Cob). Новая технология позволяет теплоизолировать стены в соответствии с современными стандартами. Архитектор Энтони Хадсон использует старинный метод строительства, в котором применялись самые доступные материалы, чтобы построить дом, соответствующий современным строительным нормам. Выход нашли в смеси соломы из конопли, земли и воды. В доме установлены большие окна с тройным остеклением, выходящие на южную сторону, для получения энергии солнца зимой, а тепловой насос с воздушным источником обеспечивает отопление.
Однако предложенный метод строительства требует много времени. Все приходится делать вручную, поэтому трудоемкость высока. Следующий шаг — выяснить, как можно сократить ручной труд. По оценкам дом с тремя спальнями из смеси Коб (Cob) можно построить за 20 000 фунтов стерлингов, но стоимость проекта Hudson Architect в настоящее время неизвестна.
В 2021 году в графстве Девон (Великобритания) местный житель Кевин Маккейб (Kevin McCabe) стал строить дом из смеси Коб общей площадью 10 000 квадратных футов (929 м кв.). По завершении строительства был построен дом, не нуждающийся в отоплении. Стоимость строительства превысила 350 000 фунтов стерлингов.
Проектировщики уверены, что такие дома станут новой нормой.
