Космические силы США заказали у подрядчика первую в своём роде технологию, способную обеспечить находящимся на орбите спутникам два года маневренности — в том числе обеспечить подвижность объектов, изначально вообще не имевших любых двигателей.
Командование космических операций (SSC) заключило контракт на $37,5 млн с компанией Starfish Space на строительство космического аппарата Otter. По данным SSC, Otter предназначен для выполнения автономных операций сближения, бесконтактных операций и стыковки с широким кругом объектов, «включая те, которые никогда не проектировались и не настраивались для возможности стыковки».
Другими словами, аппарат сможет приближаться к самым разным спутникам и стыковаться с ними, обеспечивая им дополнительную возможность перемещения в космосе, даже если это изначально не предусматривалось их конструкцией. Ранее Starfish Space продемонстрировала возможности Otter в рамках миссии Otter Pup, выполненной в июне 2023 года с помощью компании SpaceX.
Образец Otter Pup смог довольно успешно сблизиться с другим космическим аппаратом, подойдя к нему на расстояние в 1 км в мае 2024 года. В начале миссии отмечались сбои в работе двигательной системы аппарата, поэтому ближе к цели подобраться не удалось.
Впрочем, Starfish удалось спасти положение, передав данные другому оператору спутников — компании D-Orbit и уже её спутник подобрался ближе к Otter Pup, после чего Starfish Space удалось сделать снимки с близкого расстояния и признать миссию успешной.
Несмотря на определённые проблемы Starfish Space, похоже, удалось убедить военных заключить с компанией контракт. Командование ищет технологии, называемые «дополненной маневренностью».
Кроме того, дополнительных способов применения Otter немало, от поддержания орбиты объектов до продления срока их работы, перемещения с орбиты на орбиту и др. Ранее в этом году военные уже заявляли, что нуждаются в технологиях обеспечения дополнительной мобильности в космосе. Речь шла буквально о «реактивном ранце», который сможет стыковаться с существующими спутниками, чтобы обеспечить им дополнительные возможности маневрирования.
Работы над подобными технологиями ведутся военными буквально годами, в январе 2024 года SSC заключила контракт с Northrop Grumman на запуск т.н. Passive Refueling Module — космического аппарата, способного стыковаться с выведенными на орбиту спутниками и дозаправлять их. Ранее было заключено соглашение с японской Astroscale на $25,5 млн, для разработки аппарата — дозаправщика спутников, его запуск может состояться уже в 2026 году.
Сама Starfish Space намерена вывести в космос ещё один аппарат Otter уже в 2025 году.
