Но как могла возникнуть субдукция так скоро после катастрофического столкновения, которое подарило Земле ее спутника — Луну?
Ученые долгое время ломали головы над этой загадкой. Ведь гигантский удар, сформировавший Луну, должен был превратить Землю в огненный шар, расплавив большую часть ее мантии. Однако недавние исследования показали, что нижняя мантия осталась в основном твердой, а обломки мантии «ударника» возможно сохранились в виде двух гигантских аномалий, известных как зоны с низкой скоростью сдвига (LLSVP).
Представьте себе: Земля после удара — это раскаленный котел, в котором бурлит расплавленная порода. Внизу, у самого ядра, покоятся фрагменты мантии «ударника» — LLSVP. Из-за различий в составе и плотности они не смешиваются с окружающей мантией, как капли масла в воде. Но самое главное — ядро Земли после удара раскалено до предела. Эта тепловая аномалия становится ключом к разгадке тайны ранней субдукции.
Моделирование процесса показало, что раскаленное ядро порождает мощные мантийные плюмы — восходящие потоки раскаленной породы, подобные гигантским пузырям. Эти плюмы, прорываясь сквозь мантию, могут ослабить молодую литосферу — твердую оболочку Земли. Как раскаленный нож сквозь масло, плюм прорезает литосферу, и начинается субдукция.
Но это не единственный сценарий. LLSVP, будучи «инородными телами» в мантии Земли, также могут быть источником плюмов. Если они обогащены радиоактивными элементами, то разогреваются изнутри, как гигантские «батарейки», и порождают восходящие потоки, способные запустить субдукцию.
Таким образом, рождение Луны, казалось бы, катастрофическое событие, могло стать толчком к началу тектоники плит. Именно этот процесс, возможно, подарил Земле ее уникальный облик и условия для зарождения жизни.
И что же с Венерой, нашей сестрой-близнецом? Почему на ней не наблюдается тектоники плит? Ответ может крыться в отсутствии у Венеры крупного спутника. Возможно, она избежала поздних гигантских ударов, которые разогрели ядро Земли и запустили механизм субдукции. Так что Луна, наш ночной страж, не просто украшает небо, но и напоминает о том, как случайные космические события могут определять судьбу целых планет.
Если высокая температура ядра — ключ к ранней субдукции, то почему она не происходит на других планетах с горячими ядрами, например, на Меркурии?
Все дело в балансе сил. Для начала субдукции нужно не только горячее ядро, но и достаточно тонкая и «податливая» литосфера. На Меркурии литосфера очень толстая и холодная, что препятствует проникновению плюмов и началу субдукции.
Может ли субдукция, вызванная плюмами, снова возникнуть на Земле в будущем?
Это маловероятно. С течением времени ядро Земли остывает, и мантийные плюмы становятся слабее. Кроме того, литосфера Земли за миллиарды лет стала толще и прочнее. Однако, если LLSVP действительно обогащены радиоактивными элементами, они могут продолжать порождать плюмы и вызывать локальные эпизоды субдукции.
Могла ли жизнь зародиться на Земле, если бы не произошло столкновение, сформировавшее Луну?
Тектоника плит играет важную роль в регуляции климата, круговороте веществ и создании условий, благоприятных для жизни. Без Луны и тектоники плит Земля могла бы стать совершенно иной планетой, и вопрос о возникновении жизни на ней остается открытым.
